People communicate daily in countless different ways. In the midst of major conversations and casual chatting, there is quality content and resources that can be used in personal or professional projects. However, these often reach people at busy times and end up lost.
Our goal was to provide users with simple and efficient ways to share quality content and we had already launched another product for businesses looking for solutions to increase productivity and improve their results. We knew that, even though managers were pushing for innovation, general users often had their own defined workflows and toolsets.
Technology companies often hire agile workers, open to novelty but critical as to the quality of the products they use. We wanted to tackle a global market and it was necessary to understand how big companies communicate internally.
It was early 2016, and Slack was growing at an unbelievable speed within the top teams in the world. Big companies were using the cross-team communication product and it was getting powerful features with every update. With the bot-building ability released, we challenged ourselves to create something extremely simple that delivered real value to the user.
Here was an opportunity that started as a side project within Skore, but could become independent later on.

The initial goal was very clear. Build a Slack bot that captures the links shared on channels where the bot was invited and send a daily email to the team members with the highlighted content, ready for consumption.

Our challenge had just doubled in size, but we believed it had to be done. The first two actions were basic, but not enough to differentiate us with personality. Paperbot would just be a robot copying and pasting links. We wanted something alive, part of the daily life of the teams that adopted us. And those two characteristics added later would eventually shape our product.

Every good friend has his charisma, his identity and his way of expressing himself. If we wanted to be seen as a friend within Slack, we needed an impactful name, but not necessarily a human name. We wanted to have a clear reference to our function. After much research and suggestions from the entire team, we founded in the golden age of video games our greatest reference.
We found Paperboy, that boy who delivered newspapers on his bicycle, avoiding obstacles, breaking glasses and running from dogs when necessary. Like him, we also delivered content, in digital format, but in the figure of a bot. We had just found our name. Welcome, Paperbot.
The next step was to represent him visually. In a scenario in which robots and artificial intelligence are increasingly present, we are used to seeing representations of robots in movies and games. But that was not what we were looking for. Our character should have a personality close to that of a human being, far from perfection. We decided for a handmade design created by one of our team members. Simple, with imperfect lines but with unparalleled charisma. People looked at him and smiled. What better clue that this was a path we should follow?
Finally, we should know how to communicate. We knew people would try to chat with Paperbot, so we created some fun replies to demonstrate that we were ready to interact. We mixed "human" responses with clear robot language, plus some surprises as references to TV shows and movies.

Clearly introducing the user to Paperbot and making sure that the first steps were performed correctly was our next challenge. The product depends almost 100% on that. And we tried to be as straightforward as possible.
Intro, add channels, email optin. Ready! The rest was on us. Once added to a channel, the bot would automatically introduce itself to the rest of the team, and ensure more users would opt in. Our first touch point was over.

As teams go about their workday, sharing content as usual, we capture links in the backend along with metadata that will add value in the future. Simple like that, no secrets.

In the end of every work day, an automatic email delivers all content shared by the team to the user's inbox. This is a first and most popular touch point.
In parallel, and automatically, a product page is created for each team, where members can search and discover shared knowledge. All in an organized way, by categories and tags. For those who are always on the move, there is also the mobile application.
In addition, we also used artificial intelligence to deliver value, often unexpected, to users. Paperbot identifies the team's main interests, as well as the most relevant content shared. All with the knowledge of the team itself.

While in advanced testing, already open to the general public, we planned an official launch on Product Hunt to present the product to the technology community. However, we were surprised on a Sunday afternoon, when a "hunter" added us organically. Despite the unexpected moment, we had good feedback and a great response from the community. We were officially available to the world after two weeks of work.
With feedback and metrics analysis, we tracked product development, which has skyrocketed in months. The second release on Product Hunt took place officially, and again brought satisfactory results. Major companies in the world installed and started using the product then. Today, thousands of companies use Paperbot as the product of discovery and content management for teams. A huge outcome for a product that started as a side project.

Developing a product that participates in the daily life of the user without the need to change his habit, has proved to contribute to the acquisition and engagement. The fact that it was launched early in the Slack bot system also contributed positively. We have certainly been able to take advantage of the momentum in our favor. Months later, we followed the emergence of similar products and saw the community remember Paperbot at all times. We sure won the hearts of many users.
Valuing non-technical elements was also very important in this project. The character's charismatic personality and unusual responses to everyday moments were also a great learning experience. Despite the simple interaction between bot and user through text and images, it was clear that if well used, it could bring resonance and positive results.
Agile development was also a great learning experience for the team. In two weeks, we went to Product Hunt with real teams using our product. A valuable proof that the value a product delivers outweighs many other secondary factors in terms of development.
